Hull: A Rising Force in the UK’s Green Economy

Regular readers will know that we’re very proud to call Hull our home.

Axiom co-founder Joe Oughtred has roots in the area dating back centuries, and since we were founded in 2019, we’ve been passionate about supporting the local economy, collaborating with fellow Hull businesses and contributing to the city’s journey toward a more sustainable future.

So we were thrilled – and honestly not the least bit surprised – to see Hull recently named one of the UK’s greenest cities in The Co-operative Bank’s Green Cities Report.

The study measured air quality, carbon emissions, recycling rates, public transport use and access to green spaces, with Hull coming 6th overall and 2nd place for recycling. Check out the full report to see how Hull matched up against Bristol, Leeds, Nottingham and more.

The news simply confirms what Hullensians know: Hull is a city on the up, and sustainability is right at the heart of its future.

Hull’s Green Credentials Are Growing

Hull’s sustainability journey doesn’t stop there. The city is making bold moves in environmental innovation and regeneration, becoming a national leader in the transition to a low-carbon economy as it works towards its Hull 2030 Carbon Neutral plans.

One standout example of that is Hull’s position as a hub for offshore wind. The region is home to the Siemens Gamesa’s blade factory on the Humber, a state-of-the-art offshore wind turbine blade manufacturing, assembly and servicing facility at Hull’s Alexandra Dock. The factory employs about 1,300 people, having recruited more than 600 over the past 12 months, and has recently signed a £1bn deal to supply wind turbine blades for Scottish Power.

That’s on top of the eight operational offshore wind farms supplying 4.9GW of clean energy to British homes and businesses, and pipeline projects including Hornsea 3 and 4. This makes the Humber the largest offshore wind cluster in the world – a truly amazing achievement, with ripple effects on skills, employment and investment across East Yorkshire. The ambition is to deliver at least 13.8GW by 2030, representing 35% of the UK’s total energy production.

As the University’s Propelling the Future of Offshore Wind initiative outlines, Hull is “a key player in building the Net Zero energy systems of tomorrow.”

A Greener City for All

Sustainability isn’t just about large-scale infrastructure – it’s also about communities, well being and giving people a say in how their city evolves.

One project that perfectly captures this is the council’s new Right to Grow initiative. Backed by Hull City Council, this scheme invites residents to transform unused patches of council-owned land into shared green spaces – everything from community allotments to wildflower areas and urban gardens is green-fingered fair game!

It’s a simple yet powerful idea: turn overlooked or underused land into assets that benefit everyone. It aligns closely with our own belief at Axiom that sustainability should be practical and positive. Local food production, community building, biodiversity, and access to nature – all wrapped up in one initiative.

And it’s not the only one. Projects like Grow Hull and Rooted in Hull have been laying the groundwork for years, promoting urban agriculture and food education across the city. Now, with growing support, these ideas are scaling up.

Axiom’s Role

Our software helps businesses across the UK and beyond take control of their sustainability data, but our heart remains in Hull.

Axiom is proud to be working with a wide range of local companies including telecommunications specialists Quickline, paper giants G.F. Smith, the John Good Group across their property, haulage, travel and maritime businesses and Willerby, the UK’s largest manufacturer of Holiday Homes and Lodges.

We’re committed to supporting regional supply chains, investing in green skills and helping the next generation of sustainability leaders. We believe digital innovation has a critical role to play in tackling the climate crisis, and Hull is proving to be fertile ground for exactly that.

With Hull College, the University of Hull and initiatives like Oh Yes! Net Zero building momentum around environmental action, there’s a real opportunity for the city to lead the way – not just in green rankings, but in creating a blueprint for inclusive, data-driven and locally-powered sustainability. As sustainability becomes a core business priority across all industries, Hull’s strong sense of community and entrepreneurial spirit give it a real advantage.
