‘They say the best time to plant a tree is yesterday – well that is exactly what happened thanks to Humber Forest’s Community Canopy project and The Conservation Volunteers who worked even during storm Isha.
The project aims to boost tree, woodland and forest coverage across Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. And, crucially, they organised the paperwork, the volunteers and sourced the trees, shrubs and hedgerows.
My previously unused 0.3 acres of land is now home to a diverse range of trees and hedgerow shrubs, all sourced from charity Mires Beck Nursery and local family business Henley’s Nurseries.
In total, I’m now the proud owner of 815 hedgerow shrubs and 216 trees including Silver Birch, Oak trees and Field Maple alongside a range of apple, pear, plum and cherry trees.
Not only are the trees increasing the biodiversity in the region, but they’re also creating a carbon sink that can be used to offset your carbon footprint. And in a few years, I’ll be able to pick fresh fruit from my very own orchard.
Homemade apple pie aside, I would encourage commercial and domestic land owners to consider planting and looking to local government initiatives to help.’
